Guest Speaker Blog – Josh Ferry

For our first guest speaker was Mike Reed a Purchasing manager for Dover Hydraulics with an extensive history at Timken. Mr. Reed was a Walsh Alumni with a major in Finance. I think the biggest point he was trying to get across during his speech was to develop relationships with people and give back when you can.

Building relationships in business is very key to success for longevity. My takeaway from this is people may have short term success by bullying their way through but eventually will hit a blockade when no one will help them. While creating positive and strong relationships will give you access to huge amounts to insight, expertise, and experience. Giving those who have these connections with people have a huge strategic advantage over their competition.

The second speaker of the day was Erica Molina, a head account for a tech start up called Dwello in Salt Lake City, Utah. Miss Molina was also another Walsh Alumni who spoke about how she came into the position she is today. Erica had gotten a accounting job just down the road from her home as an accountant. Once she saw there was little to no room for growth the search for a new job began. This is where she stumbled upon this tech start up and actually laughed at the job post at first but eventually applied. In the end Erica was awarded the position of the lead accountant after flying out for an interview.

There were two main points to Erica’s story reaching out and building your network. Not being afraid to reach out for something you may want was something that Miss Molina actually learned through applying for this start up. Through this she was able to grow her network and meet a lot of people who have helped her and guided her through struggles she’s ran into.
